The chief competitor to Panasonic in the plasma market is Pioneer. In a side by side comparison at a big box store, the two were neck and neck and depending on the material, one might have a slight edge over the other. The Panasonic seemed brighter but that could be due to being displayed in the default “vivd” mode.

have owned this TV for over a month now and I’m completely happy with the purchase.
Most important is picture quality, which is stunning with HD sources and very good with SD material. Note that my seating position is 10 to 11 feet from the screen, so I doubt a 1080p TV would provide a significantly better picture than this 768-line set.
